Teachers’ Strike Not On NRM Caucus Agenda – Anite

Evelyn Anite, the NRM caucus Spokesperson says the ongoing nationwide teachers’ strike is not on the agenda as the NRM caucus meets at state house Entebbe today.
This as the Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) maintains that its members would not teach from today Monday, as schools re-opened for their final term this year, until their demands are met.   The teachers are demanding a 20 per cent pay rise.

Although schools across the country remain closed, Anite says the NRM caucus is meeting to discuss business in the House, Budget and the coordination between the Executive and Legislative arms of government.
However she adds that members may discuss the teachers strike if the issue comes up in the caucus and make public the resolutions that the caucus may come up with. She noted that as a concerned party, members feel that they should address the issue and challenges of the teachers
“It is the talk of the day but we do not have it here on the agenda, but we cannot rule it out because we know what is happening right now that the teachers are not teaching”, Anite says.

Meanwhile, Anite refutes allegations that the Caucus that was planned in a week’s time was called to build consensus for the NRM legislators on the teachers’ 20% salary increment.
Anite noted that as a caucus they resolved that each month they should have a meeting to discuss the business coming on the floor of parliament. She says they have a lot to discuss on House business, the budget that has not yet passed and new bills.
