No Backing Down, Striking Teachers Vow

Uganda’s teachers under their umbrella body, the Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) have vowed to continue with the strike they started on Monday September 16, the body’s General Secretary James Tweheyo has revealed.
On Monday, the teachers began a nationwide strike demanding a 20% increase in their salary.

In a press statement issued on Thursday afternoon following a UNATU meeting, the teachers resolved that the strike should continue, urging all their members to remain at home.
UNATU also resolved that they would meet on Monday 23rd September to discuss the progress of the strike.
The teachers’ body has urged parents and students to remain calm during this period until the matter is disposed off.
“Meanwhile we call upon parents/ learners to remain calm until this matter is resolved.” The statement read in part.
The teachers also called on the government to officially table the proposals they have put forward to solve the problem.
The teachers’ message of defiance comes a day after parliament adopted its budget committee report which stated that there were no credible sources of funding to effect the 20% pay rise for teachers pledged by government much to the chagrin of many.

UNATU RESOLVES TO CONTINUE WITH INDUSTRIAL ACTION: TEACHER LEADERS COUNTRYWIDE TO MEET ON MONDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER 2013
In a meeting of the UNATU National Executive Council on Thursday 19th September 2013; the following has been agreed on regarding the teachers’ industrial action;
1. That the industrial action continues and teachers should remain at home.
2. That all UNATU leaders at Regional and Branch level will convene on Monday 23rd September 2013 for an urgent meeting to discuss the progress and plan of the industrial action.
3. Any other matter will be addressed after this meeting. Meanwhile we call upon parents/ learners to remain calm until this matter is resolved.
We call upon Government to come out officially with the proposals they have put to solve this problem.
