Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday evening met the
country’s Education Ministry officials at State House over the ongoing
strike by teachers who want a 20% salary increment.
The meeting comes just a day after the ministry of education failed
to convince Uganda National Teachers Union to call off the strike during
a meeting on Monday.
Sources at the education ministry say Minister Jessica Alupo, her
junior ministers and the Permanent Secretary Dr. Rose Nasali Lukwago,
went to the State House Entebbe Tuesday morning to meet the president.
Patrick Emmanuel Muinda, the Assistant Commissioner for Communication
and Information Management at the ministry, confirmed the meeting, but
refused to disclose what would be on agenda for discussion.
Though he did not confirm whether all the ministers had gone for the
meeting, he confirmed that the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Rose Nasali
Lukwago had gone to meet the president over the salary saga.
Margaret Rwabushaija, the UNATU National Chairperson, believes the
officials have now learnt a lesson. She says if the government officials
are serious; the stand-off will be resolved in the next few days. She
however warns that the struggle will continue if the education ministry
officials come back with empty promises.
Teachers countrywide lay down tools on September 16th pushing for a 20% salary increment promised by government in 2011.
