Security along the Uganda-Kenya border has been tightened further as authorities work to avert a possible crisis following last Saturday’s terrorism attack at the Westgate mall, an upscale shopping centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
A heavy joint police and military anti-terrorism squad has been deployed the border areas of Malaba and Busia. The squad is made up of both uniform and plain-clothed security operatives, Imunna Muluga, the Resident District Commissioner – RDC of Busia says.

This morning, residents of Busia and Malaba towns woke up to the sights of unusual numbers of regular and military police on foot patrol. In addition, several security check points have been erected at all major entry point across the border.
RDC Muluga says Uganda has been hit before and with its neighbor Kenya now battling with terror attacks, they will leave no chances for the enemy. He says the latest Kenya attack is an eye opener about the continued terror threats in the region.
Meanwhile, General Katumba Wamala, The Chief of the Defense Forces says the army is working together with other security agencies to ensure the country is safe from any acts of terror.
However Jacob Opolot, the Elgon Regional Police Commander insists that the ratio of the police to Ugandans is too few to guarantee adequate security. Opolot says there are only about 42, 000 against the civilian population of 34 million. He accordingly asked the public to be keen and conscious with their security and inform the police in case of any suspicion.
