Bishop Storms Police Station, Demands Release Of Suspects

Retired Kigezi Diocese Bishop William Rukirande was among a group of people who stormed Kabale Police Station on Sunday demanding for the release of the Christians who were on Friday arrested in connection with the burning of the Diocesan offices.

Those who had been arrested included Rev. Edison Turyatunga, Robert Kibabi, Godfrey Turyatunga and John Magezi, the head of security at the Diocese.

The Christians who also included Dr. Ben Mayanja demanded that the police should immediately arrest the Diocesan Treasurer Rev. Amos Tweteise. They argued that they had information linking him to the burning of the Diocesan offices in an effort to conceal evidence concerning the construction of the revival Centre.
The security guards who were on duty at the time of the fire on Thursday told Christians that they saw Rev Tweteise entering the offices shortly before the fire started.
The confusion in the Diocese stretched further with the Christians refraining from giving offertory in protest of what they referred to as detaining their colleagues illegally under the orders of outgoing Bishop George Katwesigye.

Kabale District Police commander Bosco Arop local media that the police is taking seriously all the concerns raised by the Christians and that investigations are still ongoing.

Arop however, says the visit of the Bishop elect George Bagamuhunda will continue today as planned.
Arop says the Police will ensure that the visit goes on peacefully.

Canon Bagamuhunda was elected by the House of Bishops on August 1st. This however, angered some members of the Laity in Kigezi Diocese who accused Bishop Katwesigye of fronting his favoured candidate. They also accuse Canon Bagamuhunda of diverting funds meant for the Water and sanitation project in the diocese. He comes from Abasigi, the same clan as Bishop Katwesigye.
